Recap: Meet @ Markley Cloud Storage Overview with ClearSky Data

Last Thursday, we hosted Laz Vekiarides, the CTO & Co-founder of ClearSky Data, at our office for the June Meet @ Markley, to discuss innovative models that will make cloud storage actually work in the enterprise space. ClearSky Data is a promising early stage (and stealth) company out of Boston, with its founders bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience from their days at Dell EqualLogic.
The discussion at hand was in regards to a challenge that exists for enterprises: how does cloud storage fit into their overall storage management strategy, and further, storage budget? IT folks and business leaders alike are trying to determine if they can use cloud storage from Amazon, Microsoft and Google, typically unaware of the price “gotcha’s” that can result. Additional offerings from traditional storage array vendors also exist, but they can also expose hidden costs and infrastructure management requirements. Essentially, the options are few and far between and it’s extremely important that enterprises know those prices and their requirements going into any contracts.
Based on the discussion between ClearSky Data, Markley Group and attendees, it seems that in the next few years, enterprise IT will be able to benefit from on-demand, opex-based and highly scalable cloud services, and still achieve enterprise-class performance, latency, security and availability.
Similarly to what we outlined in an earlier post, Markley Group works with its clients to ensure they take the best approach to their ongoing storage strategy, including helping them to prioritize their cloud data storage requirements and categorizing hot and cold data into the following performance tiers to determine what can go into the cloud, how frequently it can be accessed, etc.:
- Tier Zero – typically only about five percent of active data, including mission critical data
- Tier One – typically 20 percent of active data and reserved for business critical data, such as business apps
- Tier Two – around 75 percent of data – and where most of the client’s data should live
- Tier Three – cold data, which encompasses all data, especially for compliance purposes, but with lower performance and response times than the three previous tiers
This type of knowledge and planning is most important for enterprises looking to leverage cloud storage. We look forward to learning more about what ClearSky Data will offer to the market to complement traditional models and innovate further in the space.
